Earthing for Pain & Inflammation
Welcome to our Pain and Inflammation Research page, where we delve into the science behind evidence-based pain relief and the potential of grounding (earthing) for reducing inflammation. Chronic pain and inflammation are widespread issues, significantly impacting quality of life.
Emerging research is revealing the powerful role grounding, also known as earthing, plays in modulating these conditions. By reconnecting the body to the Earth's natural electrical charge, grounding has shown promising potential in reducing inflammatory markers and alleviating pain.
This page compiles studies exploring the physiological mechanisms behind these benefits, including how grounding can influence cortisol levels, improve blood flow, and neutralise free radicals. Explore the scientific evidence supporting grounding as a natural approach to pain relief and inflammation reduction, and discover how grounding mats and other techniques may offer a valuable addition to your wellness routine.
Our goal is to equip you with the latest findings in earthing research, giving you the power to make informed decisions about your health and well-being.

📜Grounding - The universal anti-inflammatory remedy
Discover the benefits of Earthing (grounding) - better sleep, reduced inflammation, pain and stress, and improved blood flow. A study found that just one hour of contact with the Earth can significantly improve blood circulation, promoting autonomic nervous system control and enhancing facial tissue repair and skin health. Try Earthing for yourself and optimise your appearance from the inside out.

This study examined the effects of earthing or grounding therapy on the healing of chronic diabetic wounds in individuals with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Conducted in Central Java, the research involved 21 participants who underwent one hour of daily grounding for 30 days. The results showed a statistically significant improvement in wound healing (P < 0.000), indicating that grounding therapy effectively accelerated the healing process for diabetic wounds.

The research paper examines the positive effects of grounding, which involves making electrically conductive contact with the Earth, on human physiology and health. It focuses specifically on aspects such as inflammation, immune response, wound healing, and chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The paper highlights the significance of both the duration and extent of grounding for achieving these benefits.
In conclusion, the research indicates that grounding leads to measurable changes in the levels of white blood cells, cytokines, and other molecules involved in the inflammatory response. It also shows positive effects on pain reduction and immune response in cases of muscle injury.

This study investigated the effectiveness of combining massage therapy with earthing for chronic low back pain (CLBP). A total of twelve participants with CLBP were divided into two groups: one group received massage therapy and slept on a grounded mat (GRD), while the other group received massage therapy and slept on a sham-grounded mat (UGD). Both groups underwent six sessions of Jing Advanced Clinical Massage.
The results revealed that the GRD group experienced a significantly greater reduction in pain, with a decrease of 38%, compared to the UGD group, which had a reduction of only 17%. This suggests that the combination of earthing and massage may offer enhanced pain relief for individuals suffering from CLBP.
While these findings are promising, the researchers emphasise the necessity for larger-scale studies to validate the results further.
The study revealed that grounding consistently provides significant benefits for pain management, physical function, and mood—factors that are highly relevant for massage therapists. Previous results from the same trial indicated enhancements in inflammatory biomarkers, blood viscosity, and heart rate variability. This suggests that grounding can positively impact massage therapists in several important areas related to their profession, as well as their overall health and quality of life.
This study investigated the effects of grounding, which involves physical contact with the Earth's surface, on the electrical charge of red blood cells (RBCs) and the clumping of these cells. Ten healthy adult participants were grounded using conductive patches placed on the soles of their feet and the palms of their hands for a duration of two hours. The findings indicated that grounding increased the surface charge of RBCs and significantly reduced their aggregation. This suggests that grounding may be a simple and effective intervention for lowering cardiovascular risk and related events by decreasing blood viscosity and clumping.

This special section of the Biomedical Journal examines the impact of earthing on human health. The articles in this section detail how practices related to electromagnetic hygiene, including earthing, may help reduce the incidence of various diseases, lessen inflammation, improve sleep quality, and support a healthy circadian rhythm. Additionally, the journal features articles on a variety of medical topics, including the role of microRNAs in colorectal cancer, the diffusion characteristics of cerebrospinal fluid, the use of rotational radiography for reduced radiation exposure, dynamic arthroscopy for diagnosing shoulder pain, and the application of traditional Chinese medicine in analyzing chronic kidney disease.
📜Down to earth - A new type of hygiene

This study investigated the effects of "grounding shoes" (GS), which contain conductive elements, on the running performance of ten elite athletes. The researchers compared the athletes' physiological and perceptual responses while running in traditional training shoes (TTS) versus grounding shoes (GS).
Participants underwent an incremental running test to determine their VO2max and anaerobic threshold. They then completed 20-minute running economy tests at 80% of their anaerobic threshold on a dirt track. The study measured various metrics, including VO2, heart rate, lactate levels, and perceived fatigue.
The results revealed no significant differences in any of the measured variables between the TTS and GS conditions. Additionally, there was no improvement in running economy when using the grounding shoes. The study concluded that grounding shoes did not enhance the energy cost of running or affect the physiological or perceptual responses of elite runners.

The Earthing Movie:
"The Remarkable Science of Grounding" is a feature-length documentary directed by Sundance Award-winning filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell, known for works like "The Big Fix" and "FUEL." This film is based on their viral short film, "Down to Earth," which explores the scientific phenomenon of how standing barefoot on the earth can help heal our bodies.
